A form of regulation on an industry that many believe is getting out of control; the process has been handled differently in different states. Since each jurisdiction implements different rules and regulations involving car insurance, it’s difficult to come up with an overall answer as to whether or not a person can get government benefits for car insurance, but since everyone needs it, it might be beneficial to look into your specific state and see what offers you qualify for.

A relatively new phenomenon and topic in the insurance world, many have heard rumors of government car insurance that would allow certain people to receive subsidies on their car insurance.  In reality, a successful California program was put in place to regulate the prices of car insurance, but was handled by insurance companies. Different states have different laws in regards to the issue, and many states have yet to form a government car insurance program. For the few states that do offer this option, lower income families may be able to receive subsidies on their car insurance and receive what is known as a Low Cost Automobile insurance program or LCA.

Not everyone qualifies for a LCA, but many of the programs allow for insurance to be held on cars for under $400 per car per year. Designed to benefit lower income families, most states that offer this option have a site to indicate whether or not a family qualifies for it. Usually there is an application process with strict requirements needed to be eligible for the discount. Many of these sites will provide the user with a step by step process for signing up as well as guidelines as to whether or not they can receive the discount.

Other than a few government programs that offer car insurance, there are some non-profit organizations such as the APAC that allows low income families to receive discounts on pricy car insurance. In order to find out if your family qualifies for government car insurance, it is necessary to read up on all the potential discounts that families are allowed to receive. The LCA program in California is the most well known form of government car insurance, and few others have yet to be widely popularized or documented. Since each state operates differently regarding the minimum amount of insurance to be considered legal to drive, each program will vary greatly.
